Archival finding aids to the security services

Dear Researcher,
The search engines in this part of our website allow you to confirm whether the subject that interests you appeared, prior to 15 February 1990, in an operative file kept by Communist security services and allow you to look at the appropriate record in the registration or in some cases archival protocol that served for checks of the file agenda. At the same time, we must point out that the search engines for the evidence records are aids that serve only for initial orientation (partly because they are continuously being supplemented). It may happen that you will not find in them everything that the Security Services Archive has at its disposal on the given subject. If you require complete information, follow the instructions given in the How to Apply for Archival Material section. Furthermore, a found record does not mean that the archival material on the given person physically exists and is filed at the Security Services Archive. Many files and documents were physically destroyed prior to 1990 and a small amount of them are still held as classified by the security services of the Czech Republic.

Searching in the Archival Aids

In this section you will find published registration and archival aids from the provenance of individual intelligence, counterintelligence and investigative units of the State Security, including the Military Counterintelligence, the Intelligence Directorate of the Main Directorate of the Border Guard Service and Defence of State Borders and the Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak People’s Army which enables searches of the file agenda, files of object and agency investigations, files and documents of all other persons of interest to the State Security, including individuals targeted and surveilled by the counterintelligence and collaborators and secret collaborators. The Security Services Archive, in cooperation with the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, is finalizing the making accessible of archival aids of the counterintelligence units of the State Security on the model of Slovakia’s Nation’s Memory Institute in Bratislava, which has made public the records of the regional directorates of the State Security in Bratislava, Banská Bystrice and Košice, including their precursors from the period 1954 to 1990.
